Position Description Casual Outdoor Recreation Instructor
Employer: Outdoors Great Southern
Reports to: Program Manager (Community)
Location: Various locations in the Great Southern region, Western Australia
Status: Casual Employee
Salary: Fitness Industry Award MA000094. Level 4 - Level 6 ($32.03 - $36.09 per hour inclusive of casual loading) dependent on qualifications and experience. Sleepover allowance and/or vehicle allowance may apply.
Hours of work: Weekends. Minimum of 3 hours per day. May require overnight camps (Saturday and Sunday).

Outdoors Great Southern seeks a Casual Outdoor Recreation Instructor to support and deliver a range of outdoor recreation activities to children and adults. The Casual Outdoor Recreation Instructor is required Saturdays and/or Sundays during each school term of 2022. Participation programs run for eight weeks during each school term, starting in February 2022. Some programs will be held at Camp Quaranup (Albany) and other programs will run in Katanning, or a combination of both locations.

Outdoors Great Southern (OGS) aim is to improve the capacity and opportunity for residents and visitors to participate in outdoor activities in the Great Southern. As part of this aim, we provide participation programs for both children and adults throughout the year. Primary Purpose of the Role 

The primary purpose of the Casual Program Instructor role is to lead outdoor recreation programs to children and adults. The position will work under general supervision from the Outdoors Great Southern Skills Development Officer and reports to the Program Manager (Community). The position will provide instruction in a variety of outdoor recreation activities under the OGS Kids Adventure Club and the Adults Adventure Network.

Key Responsibilities 

Duties involve basic group management and supervision, ensuring all participants are included and understand the topics. There will be a requirement to lead group activities. Casual Program Instructors are required to participate in outdoor activities such as bushwalking, mountain biking, camping, and canoeing, and assist in group management for programs delivered by contract service providers in areas such as surfing, snorkelling and sailing.

Selection Criteria 

The Casual Program Instructor should have the following attributes:

  1. Experience working as an outdoor recreation instructor or fitness instructor
  2. Experience in working with groups of children and with adults
  3. Strong presentation and facilitation skills
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills
  5. Good verbal communication skills
  6. Ability to organise and prioritise a varied workload, and work under pressure and to tight deadlines

Additional Information 

  • Required qualifications: ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence, Working With Children Check, National Police Clearance, First Aid Certificate
  • Work hours: Willingness to travel and work weekends
  • Eligibility: Only Australian citizens or permanent residents may apply
  • Award: Fitness Industry Award (MA000094). The Level to be determined based on qualifications and experience. Casual loading of 30% of the minimum hourly rate applies for each ordinary hour worked on Saturday and Sunday. While most conditions are covered in the employment contract, all other matters fall within the National Employments Standards
  • Probationary Period: Two months probationary period applies
